How We Began in 2005
Husband and wife team, Brady and Shaun Breese are nearly natives of Phoenix. They attended Arizona State University, graduated in 1998, and married in 2001. In 2005, over a Sunday morning breakfast, they hatched an idea that combined Brady’s cooking talent with Shaun’s marketing background – the centerpiece was the Urban Cookie, a dark chocolate walnut cookie that Shaun made for friends and family for years. After six months of research, their dream became a reality Nov. 1, 2005, in the kitchen of Florence Crittenton, a local non-profit organization. With simplicity and quality as the cornerstones of the business, the couple took their idea to the next level with unique, funky gift packaging and gourmet all natural ingredients. The couple’s strong belief in social responsibility also was incorporated into the company.
The Cookie That Started It All
The "OG" Urban Cookie is a chewy cookie filled with dark chocolate, walnuts, oats, and coconut that may look familiar. Shaun first made this cookie in their home kitchen way back in 2005 and Brady perfected it. It quickly became beloved by all of their family and friends. This OG cookie was the first thing Urban Cookies Bakeshop started selling!
Nowadays, we have the alternative version (without gluten ingredients, dairy, eggs) on our year-round menu. When Covid-19 hit, we paired down our menu and said goodbye to this flavor after 15 years. We are bringing this fan-favorite back in celebration of 20 years! Get a taste Wednesday, 11/5 - Saturday, 11/8.

Even a memory of someone who’s passed and we’re part of their celebration of their life
We have also been fortunate to have your constant support. No matter the hurdles and challenges we have faced as a business, you have always been there. A particular memory that comes to mind is during Covid and the first day that our front door had to shut and our back door had to open to curb side pick up. We were sure no one would come. But, the first customer came two minutes after we opened —not just to place an order, but to give us a $200 tip because she “wanted us to survive.” Or the line around the building the day after we won Cupcake Wars— customers never stopped coming and that changed the trajectory of our business forever. Or the hundreds of customers who have shown patience and grace when we made a mistake— both of us vowing to continue to support one another, learn, and grow.
It’s those moments that have allowed us to be here 20 years later and in a position to be here for 20 more.

Although we started our business in 2005 with a dream to be entrepreneurs and grow a business, it’s the joy of growing people that has been the most rewarding. We are so grateful for every team member over the last 20 years who has made an impact on our business and helped us grow. We have always been fortunate to have people with real heart who join our team and work hard every day to create amazing sweet treats and a memorable experience for our customers. The team we have today also helped us expand to two locations — one of our biggest accomplishments that was only made possible by their dedication and support. But our proudest moments are what our team members do after Urban Cookies— they always seem to leave having grown in many ways. And even when they leave, they’re always family. It has been our honor to work alongside these great humans.
